What Are Terrazzo Garden Pots and Planters

What Are Terrazzo Garden Pots andPlanters

Terrazzo has been used for centuries as a material in structural applications such as flooring and walls. As a planter material, it is both durable and versatile. A composite, terrazzo consists of a variety of materials, such as crushed marble and granite, glass and marble dust, cement, water, sand and dyes. Originally, terrazzo surfaces were rough, but most planters are now polished and sealed to create a smooth finish. The natural look of marble and granite makes terrazzo planters ideal for almost any garden landscape.

The name "terrazzo" is derived from the Italian word for terraces. Terrazzo was developed centuries ago in Europe by Venetian workers wanting to find a use for marble remnants. These workers began using various sizes of marble chips left over from shaping stone terraces as a surface for the terraces around their living quarters. Later they flattened the surface to make it smoother for walking on by rubbing it with sandstone. Terrazzo came to America from Europe in the late 18th century and was used as flooring in many homes. American terrazzo was later created, and in recent decades, epoxies, polyesters, latex and acrylics were added to create a material that was not only useful for flooring but also for precast objects used both indoors and outdoors, like planters.

Terrazzo is a physically strong material that stands up to heavy use, but it is not impervious to damage. Ultraviolet rays and weather conditions can affect the surface of terrazzo planters over time, causing them to dry out and fade. Sealers are used to prevent stains and fading, but terrazzo planters should not be left outside unprotected during severe weather.

Clean your terrazzo planter with warm water. If soap is necessary, use a linseed-oil based soap and not a general-purpose cleaner. For dried-out or faded planters, use linseed oil as a polish to restore the shine, but avoid harsh detergents and substances containing acids. While the marble and granite components of terrazzo planters are stain-resistant, the cement binder used may absorb some materials. Once stains set in, they may not be removable. During the winter months, keep your terrazzo planters in a dry location, and do not allow them to sit in standing water.

Terrazzo planters are available in a variety of shapes and colors that add interest to your landscape, and they make a durable addition to container gardens. They’re ideal for indoor plants as well and can hold decorative flowers or small trees and shrubs. Place them along walkways, on decks and porches, or use them as an accent at the base of raised garden beds. When planting, fill the bottom of the pots with pebbles or gravel to prevent constant contact with moist soil, but do not obstruct the drainage holes. Ideally the pots should be placed off the ground to ensure adequate drainage.
